Flash back to London, England May 2009. Jesse Michaels, lead singer of OPERATION IVY, CLASSICS OF LOVE, illustrator/painter, author, and genius. A man so influential to thousands of people for his lyrics, his vocal style, his iconic drawings. A man who sold over a million records. I took this photo as I reflected on my own life and realized if this guy who sold over a million records can still sleep on floors of strangers homes and slum it like he was 18 yrs old then I can do it too. Much respect to all the diy bands that tour because they love music.Peace, MIKE PARK

For years I’ve been in love with a band called Hard Girls. They are not only a great band, but great friends. But I wanted them to work hard and not just rely on me and my good looks to put out their music. So here I am to announce that the new Hard Girls album “A Thousand Surfaces” will be coming out June 24th. If you’re not familiar, please get familiar. Think of a mix between The Weakerthans, Superchunk, Jawbreaker, and Guided By Voices. That’s a good start. Check out a new track from the forthcoming album and PLEASE Please do me a favor and share with friends. Peace, mike park

Interview with Jesse Michaels from Classics of Love/Common Rider/Big Rig/Operation Ivy on Giant Robot

On the upcoming, self-titled Classics of Love LP, Jesse Michaels declares, “Life is a game where you see who gets the most money/Life is a game where you see who gets the most power.” Those are some cool punk lyrics on their own but the ex-frontperson of Common Rider, Big Rig, and Operation Ivy backs up the sentiments by starting rad bands that never get played on the radio, play huge tours, or cash in. Instead, Michaels just makes totally honest, somewhat trashy, energy-packed, and supremely melodic ’70s punk-inspired music with touches of hardcore and ska. So I was stoked when our mutual friend Mike Park asked me if I wanted to contact Jesse about his band’s latest release on Asian Man Records. Cramming 13 songs into 23 minutes, it’s loaded with raging punk with touches of The Specials (“Castle In The Sky“) and Bad Religion (“We Need a Change”). Of course, the breathless, humanist, blue-collar lyrics are pure Jesse Michaels. Here’s how the conversation went…
